Language and education for new arrivals

Learning German in German classes or integration courses

Linguistic competence
Some simple statements have been allocated to different competence levels using the “Levels of linguistic competence” scale; these are helpful when assessing a person’s own language level. Language competence is structured in six levels in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (expert).

Language course
General and special courses are available for professional advancement, intensive language courses, German as a foreign language and much more. The course providers in Heidekreis are listed at the end of this page.
General information regarding the requirements and the process of attending a course can be found here.

Integration course
Integration courses can be of great help when learning German, and when attempting to understanding German culture.

The course consists of two parts:

  • a language course and
  • an orientation course.

The course is concluded with a final test and the awarding of a certificate.

Detailed information regarding the integration course has been compiled by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), and can be downloaded here.

Application forms for participation in different courses are available on the homepage of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).

Registration should take place with the course provider in person. Please ensure you bring the completed registration form and your authorisation / admission or confirmation of your mandatory participation in the integration course along with you.

EU citizens
As an EU citizen, you have no legal entitlement to participate in an integration course. However, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees may permit you to participate in an integration course if your German language skills are insufficient, if you have integration needs and if there are places available on the course.

The application for admission to an integration course can be found here. When registering with a course provider in person, confirmation of your admission must also be submitted.
